The quintessential Hawaiian oasis, three anchialine pools, provides natural irrigation to the mature native trees, including coconuts, Lauhala, and rare Loulou palms. The ancient pools rise and fall with the tides and hosts wildlife that flourishes in this habitat, including the endemic Night Heron and Hawaiian Stilt. Puako: A Brief History
Puako (Waima Point, then) was once a tiny fishing village and salt-producing settlement centuries before the arrival of James Cook. Puako was named after Princess Puako, who came from Hilo to find a husband that shared her love of Octopus. She was loved and revered by her husband's people; hence this part of the coast was named in her honor. They lived on this property, Waima Point. This is probably the reason this parcel is so large (1.62 acres) in comparison to the development around it.
Now, Puako is an exclusive residential beach enclave, including Mauna Kea and Mauna Lani. Puako has the best climate, sea life, golf, a lower population density, and easy ocean access.
