Take a step back in time while staying at this historic plantation home, originally built in 1889. The house is decorated with beautiful vintage furniture and classic bath tubs and is abundant with cozy nooks to curl up with a book and unwind. The grounds are surrounded by 100+ year old trees which sing with the Hawi, northern tip of the Big Island winds creating an incredibly relaxing environment. Downtown Hawi offers many gift shops, restaurants and a Saturday farmers market which is less than a 5 minute walk away. Yet, the estate house feels tucked away and serene even though it is located conveniently at the edge of town.
The Space
Nestled on 2.5 acres, this historic plantation home was built in 1889 for the John Hind family, the original owner of the Kohala Sugar Plantation. The house has since had an expansion of the kitchen and is fully stocked with all of the dishes you will need along with a dishwasher, microwave, large stove and lots of counter space for family dinners and entertaining. There is a large bar area that opens to the outside for sunny bbq’s and cocktails. Dine in the main inside dining room or have an open air experience in the solarium surrounded by nature.
Each bedroom is complete with lovely pieces of vintage furniture and ample sized modern bathrooms - even a clawfoot tub!. There is an abundance of couches and cozy spots to curl up with a book throughout the house and a screened lanai area for enjoying the breeze and the garden view. A large flat screen tv with cable, wifi and an assortment of board games for entertainment area bailable in social seas.
The grounds of the property are well maintained for strolling and fruiting citrus, papaya and banana trees, which offer a nice addition for your tropical breakfast experience. Lots of outdoor benches and shady spots for reading and relaxing. A 22 X 44 ft. saltwater pool is shared with the other rentals on the property and is available relaxing and sunbathing.
Hawi Plantation Estate also offers a single room cottage, side-by-side double Ohana duplex, which can be reserved for an additional fee if you decide to include more accommodations.
The Area
Hawi is a peaceful haven of a town situated on the North side of Hawai’i island with breathtaking views of the ocean and Maui, on a clear day. The drive to Hawi provides an abundance of ocean views and rolling green hills. Pololu Valley, 8 miles away, is a major destination in this area for hiking and beach access. Required for all able is a one mile hike down to the mystical Pololu beach; which is also the trailhead for many miles of magnificent hikes along a rugged ocean shore.
A quick three mile drive takes you to miles of shoreline hiking starting at Opolu Airport, which offers sky diving. Hikes along tall cliffs perfect for whale watching during the season. Rich with Hawaiian history, a five mile roundtrip will take you to King Kamehameha’s birthplace along with the Mo’okini Heiau which dates back to 480 A.D.
There are outdoor activities available such as a zipline tour and a mini golf course in the neighboring town, two miles away, of Kapaau. Yoga, Qigong, tai chi and pilates classes are available, and art galleries fill both towns with local artists creations.
Many great Kohala beaches are about a 30 minute drive away and the sweet farm town of Waimea is a 30 minute drive away.
